Manhouce

According to Pinho Leal, Portugal in Ancient and Modern, in this village there was a hostel for poor passengers, founded by D. Mafalda, the wife of D. Afonso Henriques, thus preceding the Albergaria da Serra.

Nowadays, typical of many older houses still present in this village, but over time, see themselves as more modern constructions, fortunately without major architectural daring.

In the fields, one sees more corn than rye. But the seat of the parish is still very well preserved, and the place has Sequeiros, the source of the road, a number of interesting buildings.

The stocks Manhouce are widely dispersed, which is the mountain village with more places: the headquarters south Sernadinha have dry areas and on the main road, north Gestoso Gestosinho Bondance and more or less near the same road, Salgueiro, the road to Cabreiros;

Lajeal, Muro, Malfeitoso and Vilarinho, to climb the mountain, along the upper valley of the Rio Teixeira; Field, Rocha, Sales, Bou, Wine and Carregal, to the west, the path of Lomba, Chestnut, Areeiro and Juncal also saw above, but more to the southeast, very isolated in the mountains, on the south, Riyadh, away from it all, now get down to the other side of the mountain, and three Bostarenga Antas; Anta Up, Low and Anta Anta Cova. This, not to mention in several places with only one house, as in Louseira.

There were several in your area tungsten mines, which can still be the remains of the mines of teas.

The current Manhouce was crossed by the Roman road, passing around two bridges over the River Teixeira and a small stream, there are still lying in the stream in full use. This Roman road, may find themselves five sections preserved.

The church of Manhouce, a beautiful temple dating guaranteed not to be the result of successive arrangements, served as a “field hospital” during the 3rd French invasion.

The neighborhood is crossed by Manhouce Teixeira River, with areas of great beauty, often difficult to access, among them stands the so-called Black Well, unfortunately deeply affected by the construction of a mini – hydro, mainly in the margins. It is also of great beauty of the Well of stone that lies beneath the bridge on the main road.

Were recorded in Manhouce 89 mills. Near the entrance to Gestosinho, there is a group of four mills and well preserved, with the river water which feeds them, provides a framework so beautiful and rare.

At the entrance to Arouca, slightly above the serving Bondance, one can see, right next to the road, a small building that at first sight is like many others, but also brings a curiosity to be a mill for grain and a stomp linen, both abandoned.

In 1997/98, were laborious and carefully recognized several looms that could be in the neighborhood and was organized with them a course of weaving. The machines are now in a small flag properly signed, at the northern entrance of the parish.

In this village there are also two dolmens or tumuli already classified, following a fire, were discovered the remains of twenty, as I mention the site itself.

Abundant Manhouce the shrines, and is very interesting that you can do with some difficulty on the outskirts of the village of Bondance, a threshing floor.

Although they use very Manhouce cars cows, which are yoked to the cart with a yoke that is based on cushions in leather and horsehair to save the traumatic action of the yoke on the neck and the animals are smaller than those used in region. Unfortunately the typical wooden wheels covered with an iron ring was put aside in favor of fully iron wheels, they are not as effective on the rock, steeper terrain.

Manhouce, now has two country houses: A reconstruction is an exquisite home set – barns – folds in the center of the parish, the other is the intelligent adaptation and expensive, a fifth of the isolated village, near the road to the Carregal. And there is also the former home of the ranger Alagoa, recently remodeled and adapted.

Manhouce Still, there is also a singing group as well as their soloist, D. Isabel Silvestre, there is also another group of Song, the group of houses Manhouce, dedicated to collecting folk songs, and dances.
