Flora Workshop @ Gamoal – May 15th, 2010

Workshop Plant
Discovering the Flora of the Gralheira Mountains
Gamoal (Manhouce, S. Pedro do Sul)
May 15, 2010

The Traditional Knowledge Workshops are designed to stimulate interest in issues related to agricultural and pastoral life, biodiversity and the relationship between man and landscape.

These workshops go beyond mere contemplation, offering a practical and multidisciplinary approach to various themes.

The flora of the Gralheira Mountains is an immense and complex world, details of which often go unnoticed to most people.

The deep knowledge of local flora is shared on the one hand, by local connoisseurs, who can talk about the names and popular uses of plants, stories and myths around it and, secondly, by experts who systematize, catalog and discover species and can speak of their morphological and bio-chemical properties.

It is precisely this encounter between traditional and scientific knowledge that will be the key point of this workshop. Mr. Domingos’ deep knowledge of the flora around Manhouce (and his village of Gamoal), along with Dr. João Almeida, a university specialist in the flora of this region and Mr. Arménio Matos, gardener and collector of the Botanical Garden of Coimbra, will share with participants as much information about the plants of this unique area of our country.

13:00 pm – Typical lunch
